Bears vs. Chargers: Instant analysis of Chicago’s 30-13 loss in Week 8

imageThe Chicago Bears suffered a 30-13 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football, where they failed to win back-to-back games for the first time under head coach Matt Eberflus.

Rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent made his second NFL start, where he opened things up in the passing game but also came back down to earth after winning his first start a week ago.Chicago’s top-five run game mustered just 73 yards, the defense was manhandled by quarterback Justin Herbert and Eberflus was outcoached by another coach on the hot seat.

Despite hopes of a memorable comeback, the Bears couldn’t muster up the magic they needed. After a challenging first half, particularly on defense, the Bears ultimately fell to the Chargers in ugly fashion.

We break down the game:

The Bears had bright spots, particularly in their passing game.

Rookie Tyson Bagent showed promise, making quick throws in rhythm.

The young quarterback is quickly building chemistry with DJ Moore and Cole Kmet. This trio has started to jell; in just two games with Bagent, the wide receiver and tight end have combined for 188 yards on 25 targets.

However, inconsistency marred the Bears’ performance and the team found themselves in a deep hole early on, down 24-7 by halftime.Promising drives ended prematurely, potential touchdown passes were dropped, and interceptions killed momentum. The running game was particularly disappointing.

While Darrynton Evans managed an 11-yard touchdown, the Bears ground attack was notably weaker than last week. The trio of D’Onta Foreman, Roschon Johnson, and Evans only put together 73 yards averaging a meager 3.8 yards per carry.

Justin Herbert was a force to be reckoned with.Even with a broken finger on his non-throwing hand and a depleted receiver corps, Herbert shined, completing 31 of 40 passes for 298 yards and three touchdowns. The Bears defense, unfortunately, couldn’t get much pressure, leaving Herbert sack-free and turnover-free in the game.

Much of the first half saw the Bears defense lagging, especially in the secondary. The absence of veteran Eddie Jackson and second-year safety, Jaquan Brisker, was deeply felt. The Chargers scored on their first five possessions and did not punt until the second half.

Despite the game being out of reach, the Bears defense was gritty, forcing a fumble and allowing the offense to score their second touchdown.

The Chargers demonstrated why they are one of the league’s top teams.

As for the Bears, while their spirit and grit are commendable, they must improve their execution.Depth in the offensive line and secondary is a problem, and so is the inability to produce consistently week-to-week.Despite not witnessing a legendary comeback tonight, the Bears displayed resilience.

The passing offense continues to improve, hinting at a brighter future.Hopefully, that future is next week as the Bears travel to New Orleans on Nov.5 in search of their third win of the season..
