While it was presumed that the Commanders would take a quarterback, there wasn’t the same level of certainty over whether they would lean towards LSU’s Jayden Daniels or North Carolina’s Drake Maye. The talk in the lead-up to Friday’s draft was that they would take Daniels, who is the more polished and readymade quarterback at this stage of his career, and that ended up being the case.

It left the New England Patriots, who had the third overall pick, to take Maye and pair him alongside veteran Jacoby Brissett, who they signed in free agency to a one-year deal. There were suggestions the Patriots, who have plenty of needs across the board including at offensive line and receiver, could have been a trade-down candidate. However, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported ahead of the draft that team like the Vikings, Broncos and Raiders were told “it would take significant draft capital for New England to trade out of its spot”.Clearly that kind of offer never materialised, with New England staying put.MORE NFL DRAFT COVERAGE IOWA’S AUSSIE ICON: How Tory Taylor became a ‘revered’ college football cult hero QB STATE OF PLAY: From ‘next superstar’ to ‘polarising’ prospect no-one agrees on BURNING QUESTIONS: Why record QB frenzy looms as teams plot desperate gamble Mailata brings NFL Draft down under! | 00:41 The next genuine trade-down candidate was the Arizona Cardinals, who were picking at fourth overall. But the Cardinals clearly didn’t get the kind of offer that was appealing enough to move down, instead taking superstar receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.The Los Angeles Chargers at No.5 overall were also a contender to trade back, although they ended up taking Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt to help protect quarterback Justin Herbert.Speaking of Herbert, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed both the Patriots and Vikings reached out to the Chargers to see if they had any interest in trading Herbert.

“A flat no,” was the answer according to Schefter.Another intriguing team to monitor early in the draft was the New York Giants at No.6 given they too could have been in the market for a quarterback given Daniel Jones’ struggles since signing a four-year, $160 million contract with $92 million.Jones tore his ACL last year and the first potential out in the contract for the Giants is not until 2025, with a dead-cap hit of over $22 million.Having a rookie quarterback on the books would make that easier to take, although New York is also in desperate need of a true alpha receiver. With that in mind, the Giants made a big call as they passed on J.J McCarthy to instead draft explosive LSU receiver Malik Nabers.

The Tennessee Titans and Falcons at No.7 and No.8 profiled as teams that will improve their offensive line and defence respectively at this year’s draft and that proved to be the case for the Titans, taking Alabama offensive tackle JC Latham. The Falcons, however, produced the first bombshell pick of the draft as they took Penix Jr.It left the Bears, also picking at ninth overall, in the perfect position to add another weapon to support Williams alongside Keenan Allen and D.J.

A surprise trade late in the draft, meanwhile, saw Kansas City move up and Buffalo move down as the reigning Super Bowl champions added much-needed speed by taking Xavier Worthy, who ran a record 4.21 40 at the Combine.Read on for a full recap of all the picks in the opening round of the NFL Draft below! 2024 NFL Draft Results Round 1 1.Chicago Bears (from CAR) — Caleb Williams, QB, USC 2.Washington Commanders — Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU 3.New England Patriots — Drake Maye, QB, UNC 4.Arizona Cardinals — Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State 5.Los Angeles Chargers — Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame 6.New York Giants — Malik Nabers, WR, LSU 7.
